Croxteth Hall

Halloween Night

31st October 2012

Event Details: Start Time: 8.30pm  Finish: 3.30am

History Of Croxteth Hall

The original house was built in about 1575, and has been expanded in several stages in Tudor, Georgian, and Queen Anne styles. The principal front, the west façade, was built in 1702.

Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children stayed at Croxteth Hall on 9 October 1851 before visiting Liverpool the following day during torrential rain. However, the visit started fine with 700 members of the local gentry being entertained in the Hall grounds.[2]

The Hall and its outbuilding are a Grade II* Listed Building, as are 3 of the outbuildings; another 15 buildings on the estate are Grade II. The Molyneux family lived at the Hall from the 16th century until 1972, when the last Earl died. His American-born widow Josephine, Countess of Sefton (1903–1980) – once a close friend of the Duchess of Windsor and nicknamed “Foxy” for her abundant auburn hair – continued to spend some time at Croxteth. She became the last member of the Molyneux family to reside in the hall.

When the last Earl died in 1972, a worldwide search was made for an heir to the title but without success.

Much of the original estate has since been sold off for development, but approximately 500 acres (2 km²) remain as a country park, which is open to the public and includes various play facilities for children. The estate also contains the historic Hall itself, open to the public for a small fee, as well as a maintained Victorian walled garden and a working country farm.

Paranormal Activity:

Many spirits are reported to be haunting Croxteth Hall including, a boy who stands by the fireplace in the dining room, a shadow of a figure in the billiard room, and the 6th Earl of Sefton walking around the tearoom.

Footsteps are heard along the corridors of the hall and the smell of tobacco can be detected in the servants room. There are constant electrical faults reported and when a electrician comes to mend the fault, they find nothing wrong.

Two people commented about a visit,We both heard heavy footsteps coming down the corridor outside the kitchen and through the window into the corridor a small hooded figure came up the hall and stopped in the doorway surprised to see us he had a strange horrific face with a funny nose and chin and wore a hood and a cloak.

When the park was used for sleep overs in the past One lady reported back saying,We had to sleep at…the hall. Every time you went down the stairs to go the toilet or get a drink you would see three dead bodies walking along the room. it was really scary! Everyone hated having to sleep there. However there was no choice. i never liked sleeping there it was so creepy! I’ll never go to the place again and i always get the creeps when i drive or walk past the entrance to the hall…

The Sixth Earl of Sefton has been sighted walking through the tea room and also in his former bedroom its like he is keeping guide of his property. An incorporeal young boy was once seen standing by the fireplace in the dining room, while other strange shadows have been reported drifting down various corridors. Footage from a CCTV camera in April 2009 reputedly shows a phantom figure moving across the grounds, though the image is more likely to be a close-up of an insect.

From Sky News

Paranormal experts are investigating an alleged ghost sighting apparently caught on CCTV in the grounds of an Edwardian country house.

In the eight-second footage, a luminous yellow glow is seen emerging from trees outside Croxteth Hall in Liverpool.

It then heads towards a path leading to the house before disappearing.

Like many old buildings, the hall has a reputation for being haunted, and the mystery light – captured at 3am last month – has left paranormal enthusiasts in high spirits.

County Hall ghost on CCTV

One theory among the happy mediums is that it may be the ghost of former resident Hugh William Osbert Molyneux, the 7th Earl of Sefton, who died in 1972.

Another contender is the infamous gambler William Philip Molyneux, the 2nd Earl of Sefton, who laid the foundation stone for nearby Aintree Racecourse in 1829.

A local legend says his spirit appears and strolls the grounds around the time of the Grand National.

Ghost appears during Grand National

Former Most Haunted ghost hunter and TV presenter Jason Karl has seen the footage, and believes it could be an important sighting in ghost circles.

He told Sky News Online: “This is very intriguing. Video footage of phantoms is very rare.

“If this stands up to scrutiny, it could be a very important piece of spectral evidence for the worldwide community of paranormal enthusiasts.”

He believes the last time an alleged ghost sighting was caught on CCTV was at Belgrave Hall in Leicester in December 1998.

Then, security cameras appeared to capture a strange white apparition, but it later turned out to be a fake, he said.

Liverpool councillor Berni Turner said she was keeping an open mind about the Croxteth Hall footage.

“I’m a huge believer in the paranormal and think this footage is really interesting,” she said.

“It’s great to think that we may have ghosts walking around these beautiful grounds.”

Generations of the Molyneux family lived at the hall from the sixteenth century until the death of the last Earl in 1972.

Walton Hall Ghost Hunt with DeadLive

Part of the SugaBuddha Mind Body Spirit Fayre Events

Walton Lea Road, Walton, Warrington, Cheshire, England, WA4 5SN

10.30pm till 3.30am – Ticket Price £28.00

Part of the SugaBuddha Mind Body Spirit Fayre Events.

The mansion is Elizabethan in style, but was actually built in the 1830′s, as the family home of Gilbert Greenall. Here, the Warrington brewer adopted the lifestyle of a country squire with great success and earned the title of Lord Daresbury.  Lewis Carroll is believed to be one of the early visitors, enchanted by the wooded ridge and the nearby Bridgewater Canal. Today the hall and thirty acres of surrounding parkland is widely used for wedding parties, business functions and family celebrations.

Walton Hall is now owned and maintained by Warrington Borough Council. After completing a lengthy programme of refurbishment, restoring much of the original splendour and incorporating modern facilities, we are left to see this building in its full splendour. Now the oak panelling and elaborate mahogany fireplace in the hall are in view together with the stained glass panelled windows which light up the impressive staircase, and the antique pianos and furnishings create an atmosphere of a time long forgotten.

There have been paranormal sightings within the Walton Hall and the grounds and it is said that the spirit of Lady Daresbury haunts her old bedroom and the staircase. The sounds of a lady crying are often heard by staff coming from the upstairs rooms. Ghosts of children play in empty rooms and are often heard running around the building. Some of the main function rooms are haunted by a dark figure of a man. He is seen, felt and heard by many visitors who hire the hall and have found themselves standing next to him on many occasions.

The outside offices are also very active with sounds of spirit and sighting of maids running through the outside buildings.

The original building was built in 1893 and used for a number of years as New Jerusalem church but 25 years ago it was de commissioned and now used as a sea cadets for the people of Wigan. With baptisms weddings and burials a thing of the past, the cadets are left to investigate the many rooms and alcoves found in the church and the school hall at the back of the building.

Some of the original windows and doors still remains with doors opening onto rooms and into rooms where none of the congregation from the past could enter. We have access all areas from attic rooms bell tower and cellars now used for storage.

One area found on our initial investigation although a church that welcomed many of the people from wigan our team felt unwelcome once we entered with our equipment.

In the rope room shadows seemed to manifest from the floor with different team members witnessing this on different vigils. A conversation with a man that hung himself in the school hall was also picked up during various vigils in a number of areas within the building. In a room that is now used as a store room and repair room we were told in no uncertain terms that we were not welcome and we were from a negative background. Electronic voice phenomena (EVP)  had been picked up with children and adults heard talking and singing which could well of been residue energy.

In the cellar area a mist was witnessed on 3 occasions while doing experiments with Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and also a lone vigil. In the de commissioned church shadows were seen moving around the now empty room and what looked like a man sitting in thin air.
